L’intervista di oggi vorrei iniziarla in un modo diverso, vorrei iniziarla raccontandovi una storia. Una storia che parla di me e dei miei sogni, resi possibili grazie ai sogni di un’altra persona. Avevo 15 anni e, con un desiderio lampante di diventare scrittrice, scrissi il mio primo vero racconto. Parole nere su un foglio bianco. Non avevo idea di cosa scrivere, nemmeno di cosa avrei parlato. Solo una cosa sapevo: che ci sarei riuscita.
Lo sapete perché? Avevo solo 15 anni, e non conoscevo ancora la vita. Ma nelle mie orecchie, quel giorno, c’era qualcosa che mai avevo ascoltato prima di allora. Un pianista sudcoreano – l’avrei scoperto dopo – mi suonava prepotentemente nell’anima, entrando con le sue mani nel cuore e procurandomi sensazioni che, una ragazza di 15 anni, solitamente non prova. Ma io le avevo lì, quelle sensazioni. Le avevo tutte lì, e vi giuro che quella è stata la mia prima vera emozione! Solo più tardi, avrei scoperto il nome di quella melodia che per me era stata miracolo.
“River flows in you”, una serie di note assemblate in modo accurato ma capace di scaturire tutta la magia e la bellezza del mondo. Da quel momento, quella melodia e quel pianista mi avrebbero accompagnato nel mio viaggio della scrittura, proprio come sta accadendo ora, che scrivo mentre lo ascolto.
Oggi, quel pianista è qui con noi. La musica di Yiruma – questo il suo nome – è una musica che non ha parole, la cui forza e intensità non si possono descrivere. E’ il Paradiso che discende nelle sue mani e si tramuta in note che sono quasi farfalle; la musica di Yiruma è infatti una musica che porta ali, attraverso le quali è in grado di volare nei cuori di chi ascolta e di chi avverte dentro di sé la necessità di avere forza e coraggio.
Sì… la sua musica è quasi rigenerante, terapeutica, una musica che salva, una musica che ispira. Il suo è uno stile diverso, originale, uno stile che lascia il segno, che trasforma illusioni in sogni, e sogni in realtà. Uno stile leggero, potremmo dire. Leggero, quanto dolce e delicato. Ma è anche uno stile forte e intenso.
La musica di Yiruma è fatta di contrasti, ma contrasti meravigliosi che ognuno dovrebbe conoscere. Contrasti che conducono alle sfumature dell’anima, e che sono in grado di costruire le emozioni che siamo capaci di provare. La sua è una musica che si ascolta ad occhi chiusi, quando l’unico sogno diventa sognare, ma che si ascolta anche ad occhi aperti, quando il sogno di diventare chi vogliamo essere è vivo dentro di noi. La sua è una musica che costruisce nuovi mondi, nuove dimensioni in cui potersi rifugiare; una musica che, nella sua indole fantasiosa, è comunque capace di guardare la realtà, ma una realtà che si trasforma in qualcosa di magico.
La musica di Yiruma proviene da un luogo ignoto, sconosciuto, quasi misterioso, ma atterra in un posto necessario, importante. E’ il posto in cui nasce l’amore, la bellezza, gli sguardi, la semplicità, le cose belle della vita. La definirei così la sua musica: un luogo in cui nasce l’amore. E l’amore, con le sue note nelle orecchie, diventa sempre più bello.
Yiruma è nato e cresciuto in Sud Corea ma è stato educato in Inghilterra. Ha iniziato a studiare pianoforte all’età di 5 anni. Nel 1988 si è trasferito in Inghilterra, e nel dicembre 1996 ha partecipato all’album The Musicians of Purcell della Decca Records. Si è laureato alla Purcell School di Londra nel luglio 1997, e in seguito al King’s College dell’Università di Londra nel giugno 2000. Yiruma è conosciuto in tutto il mondo e i suoi album di musica strumentale sono venduti in Asia, Europa e parte degli Stati Uniti.

D: Da dove proviene la musica che produci?
R: La mia musica deriva da tutto, un film che ho visto, le persone che incontro e mi circondano, la natura e certamente la mia famiglia.
D: Come e quando hai capito che essere un pianista sarebbe stata la tua vocazione?
R: Se devo essere sincero, non avevo mai pensato di diventare un pianista ma, sin dall’età di 9 anni ho creato musica, quindi ho deciso di diventare un compositore che suonasse la propria musica.
D: Raccontaci come nasce l’ispirazione per “River flows in you”, uno dei brani più celebri che hai composto.
R: Ho l’abitudine di comporre musica con la televisione accesa. Un giorno in tv c’era un programma riguardo la “River Dance”, una danza irlandese estremamente popolare in Inghilterra. Quindi, ho iniziato suonando la chiave e sentivo il movimento delle dita veramente veloce, come la River Dance. E’ questo il motivo del titolo e la ragione della parola “River”.
D: Chi ascolta la tua musica, piange dall’emozione. Capita anche a te di piangere mentre suoni?
R: Non ricordo esattamente quando ma spesso cerco di guardare indietro nel tempo, quando creavo i primi brani musicali e mi capitava di piangere mentre suonavo.
D: Quale immagine vedi dinnanzi a te quando sei immerso tra le note?
R: A volte mi capita di vedere un’immagine, altre volte no. Immagino scenari come foreste, piccoli deserti, il mare, il cielo o posti dove non sono mai stato. Credo che le immagini o gli scenari che si vedono con i propri occhi non possono superare le immagini che si creano ad occhi chiusi.
D: Come nasce l’idea per questo stile musicale che ti differenzia da altri musicisti?
R: Non saprei dirtelo. Infatti non so le differenze. Non saprei descriverti nemmeno il mio stile.
D: Hai suonato nei più importanti teatri mondiali. Ce ne è uno in particolare che ricordi maggiormente?
R: Ogni palco in cui mi sono esibito è stato per me importante, ma il Perelman Stage a Carnegie è uno di quelli che ricordo maggiormente. E’ sempre stato un mio sogno, sin dalle mie aspirazioni giovanili. Pensavo di non essere in grado di misurarmi con quel palco come pianista classico, ma sono un compositore che suona la propria musica. In quel momento i miei sogni sono diventati realtà.
D: Qual è la melodia a cui sei più legato?
R: Ho impiegato molto tempo a comporre una melodia che sembrasse una canzone senza parole. Questa potrebbe essere una ragione per la quale le persone amano la mia musica. Viene dal profondo di te. Io cerco di renderla semplice ma delicata. Una musica a cui sono più legato è “Kiss the rain”.
D: Qual è la sensazione che credi di trasmettere a chi ti ascolta?
R: Ci sono molti miei brani che le persone possono riprodurre con semplicità. Ed è uno degli elementi che prendo più in considerazione quando scrivo musica. E’ la percezione di una “buona musica da piano”. Aiutare le persone a provare una performance: io assumo questo ruolo. Quindi vorrei trasmettere alle persone l’amore per il piano.
D: In particolare, una delle tante melodie da te realizzate, che è in grado di entrare in modo quasi prepotente nell’anima e scaturire brividi e visioni è “Kiss the rain”. Cosa hai pensato quando l’hai composta e qual era la tua iniziale intenzione?
R: Quando quella melodia ha iniziato a risuonare nella mia testa, camminavo per Waterloo Bridge a Londra; era una giornata di pioggia e ho iniziato a canticchiare la melodia. Così è nata “Kiss the rain”. Questo brano è solitamente usato per una serie coreana intitolata “Scent of summer” ed è stata la prima sensazione che ha avvertito la gente.

Today, I’d like to begin this interview in a different way; I’d like to begin it telling you a story. A story that talks about me and my dreams, realized thanks to another person’s dreams. I was 15 years old and, dreaming to become a writer, I wrote my first real short story. Black words on white paper. I had no idea what I’d write, or what I’d talk about. I knew only a thing: I’d be able.
Do you know why? I was only 15 and I didn’t know life. But, in my ears, that day, there was something that I had never listened before. A South Korean pianist sounded powerfully in my soul, entering in my heart with his hands, sending me a lots of feelings that a 15 year old girl doesn’t usually feel. But, I had those feelings there. I had all there, and I swear that it was my first real feeling! Later, I discovered the name of that melody, that was for me a miracle.
“River flows in you”, a series of notes accurately assembled, but capable to send all the magic and the beauty of the world. After that moment, that melody and that pianist would have accompanied me in the path of writing. It’s happening also now: I write while I listen to him.
Today, that pianist is here with us. The music of Yiruma – this is his name – is a music that has not words. I can’t describe his strenght and intensity. It’s the Paradise that falls into his hands and turns into notes that become butterflies; the music of Yiruma is a music that brings two wings, with which it is able to fly in the heart of the listener, sending him strenght and courage. Yes.. his music is therapeutic, a music that saves, a music that inspires. His style is different, original, a style that leaves its mark, that turns illusions in dreams, and dreams in realities. A light style, we can say. Light, sweet and delicate. But, it’s also strong and intense. The music of Yiruma is made of contrasts: wonderful contrasts that everyone should know. Contrasts that bring a lots of soul shades, that are able to build emotions. His music is a music that we can listen with eyes closed, when our only dream is dreaming, but it’s also a music that we can listen with eyes opened, when our only dream is becoming the person that we’d like to be. His music builds new worlds, new dimensions; it’s a music that, in his imaginative nature, is able to see the reality: a reality that becomes something magical.
The music of Yiruma comes from an unknown, almost mysterious, place, but it lands in a necessary, important place. It’s the place where love was born, but also the beauty, the looks, the simplicity, all the good things in life. I’d define his music in this way: a place where love was born. And the love, with his notes in ears, becomes more and more beautiful.
Yiruma was born and raised in South Korea, and educated in England. He began playing the piano at the age of five, and subsequently moved to London at the age of eleven (1988), for the purpose of studying at The Purcell School of Music. In December 1996 he participated in the album The Musicians of Purcell (Decca). Graduating from Purcell School of Music in July 1997, Yiruma continued his musical aspirations and completed a Composition major from King’s College London in June 2000. While studying at Kings College, this promising pianist released his first album “Love Scene” through DECCA records. Additionally, during his time in college, he participated in a musical tour in Europe. Yiruma is famour in all the world, all over in Asia, Europe and United States.
Now, I leave the word to Yiruma, wishing him to continue in this wonderful way.
Q: For you, where comes from the music that you make?
A: My music comes from everywhere, the film I’ve seen, the people I meet and my surroundings, the nature and of course, my family.
Q: When and how did you understand that being a pianist would be your vocation?
A: Being honest, I’ve never thought of become a pianist but, I always put my eager and stepped in to the world of creating new music when I was 9 and finally decided to become a composer who plays one’s own music.
Q: Tell us how the inspiration for “River flows in you” (one of the most famous tracks that you have composed) was born.
A: I have this habit of writing music while the TV is on. One day, there was a TV commercial about ‘River Dance’, it’s kind of an Irish dance show which was extremely popular in UK. Suddenly, I started playing the keys and felt that the movement of finger works were very much look alike to the River Dance. That’s how the title was made and that’s the reason why I used the word ‘River’.
Q: The people who listen your music often cry for the emotion. Do you cry when you compose a track, too?
A: I cannot remember exactly when but I do try often to look back the time when I first created a piece of music and sometimes I do cry a little while I perform.
Q: Which picture do you see when you are immersed in your notes?
A: I try to picture or I don’t try to picture. In fact, I picture many sceneries such as the forest, the semi desert, the sea, the sky or the places where I have never been to. I believe that the picture or the sceneries you see with very own eyes cannot exceed the picture that you can imagine while the eyes closed.
Q: How the idea of your style of music that differences you from others musicians was born?
A: I cannot tell you. In fact, I do not know the differences. Even, I still do not know what my style is.
Q: You have played in the most important international theatres of the world. There is one that you remember more?
A: Every stage I went on was important but I have to say the Perelman stage at the Carnegie was one that I can remember most. It was one of my dream stage where I always had my admiration since I was a student. Had in mind that I’d never be able to go on that stage as a classical pianist but now, as I am a composer and a pianist who plays my own works, it was a moment of my dream becoming all real.
Q: What is the melody that you are more tied?
A: I spend most time writing a melodic tune which sounds like a song but without words. That might be a reason why people love to play my music. It gets you deep inside you naturally. I try to make it simple but delicate. Must say that the typical music has to be ‘Kiss The Rain’.
Q: What is the sensation that you think to transmit to people?
A: There are many pieces of mine which people can be played without needing too much skills. And that was the most important part which I consider most when I write music. It was the perception of ‘good piano music’. Helping people to enjoy their performance and I assume that these points I have mentioned have transmitted to the people who love playing the piano.
Q: One of the melody that you have composed is “Kiss the rain”, that can enter in soul, giving chills and visions. What did you think when you composed it e which was the initial sensation?
A: At the time when the melody struck my head, I was crossing the Waterloo Bridge in London and it was a cloudy day, started to drizzle then I started to hum the melody and that was it, ‘Kiss the rain’ was made. This track has eventually used for Korean drama series named ‘Scent of Summer’ and became the initial sensation to the people.
