La mia penna oggi volerà oltreoceano, e farà visita nelle parole di una scrittrice americana che, con il suo primo romanzo, sta spopolando in tutti i paesi del mondo.
Il suo nome è Cynthia Swanson, autrice del libro dal titolo italiano “La rivincita di una libraia” (Garzanti Editore), che presto diventerà un film prodotto e interpretato dalla grande Julia Roberts.
Il protagonista di questo capolavoro è senz’altro il tema della scelta, un luogo ed anche un non-luogo in cui riusciamo sempre a rifugiarci. La scelta di essere quello che avremmo voluto essere, e anche la scelta di diventare l’esatto opposto. Un conflitto, dunque, tra chi siamo e chi diventiamo. Tutto questo attorniato dalla lotta tra sogno e realtà, una vita diversa da quella che viviamo e una vita uguale a quella che sogniamo.
L’unica certezza di Katharyn – la protagonista del romanzo – è la sua libreria, un mondo fatto di quelle stesse parole che sogna di notte, quando la sua vita è un paradiso negli occhi. Parole che sembrano invece svanire quando si ritrova a costretta ad aprire quegli occhi, che sono per lei solo un pretesto per restare viva. L’autrice alimenta la storia con uno stile semplice ed immediato, donando al lettore la sensazione di essere in quel mondo costruito dalla sua immaginazione e mai abbandonato.

D: Come nasce l’idea di questo romanzo?
R: Un giorno mentre stavo vivendo il mio quotidiano, ho avuto un momento di dubbio se appartenessi davvero al luogo in cui mi trovavo. La mia vita in quel momento non mi apparteneva. Questo mi ha fatto pensare ad un personaggio che si chiedesse dove si trovasse e se vi appartenesse.
D: Definirei la libreria come il “mondo dei sogni”. Qual è il ruolo che le librerie hanno nella tua vita?
R: Ovunque ci sono libri è per me un posto da sogno. Amo l’abbondanza presente in negozi di libri e librerie.
D: Quali sono le differenze e le somiglianze tra te e il tuo personaggio Kitty?
R: Kitty è più indipendente di me e più soddisfatta della sua vita (o impara ad esserlo), ma entrambe amiamo la musica, l’arte, i libri… e i gatti!
D: Perché hai scelto Denver come città del tuo romanzo?
R: Denver è la città dove vivo, è stata una scelta naturale. Non sono nata a Denver, ma ci ho vissuto per 15 anni, ed è stato molto affascinante per me ambientare lì la mia storia.
D: Durante la stesura del romanzo, come mai hai deciso di parlare del contrasto tra realtà e sogno?
R: Penso sia una battaglia universale, tutti ci pensano. Quello che “potrebbe essere” è una domanda che ciascuno di noi ad un certo punto si pone, e ho voluto esplorare come i sogni si possano scontrare con la realtà.
D: Il tuo racconto sta per diventare un film prodotto e interpretato da Julia Roberts. Quali sono le tue sensazioni ed aspettative?
R: È davvero emozionante! Julia Roberts è una delle mie attrici preferite, quindi sono davvero in fibrillazione che sarà la star della versione cinematografica di “La rivincita della libraia”. Per quanto riguarda le mie aspettative, preferisco andare passo dopo passo. C’è un lungo processo per la creazione di un film, quindi festeggerò ogni traguardo man mano che arriverà, senza pensare troppo a come potrebbe essere.
D: Qual è il messaggio che vuoi trasmettere ai lettori attraverso le tue pagine?
R: Imparare la lezione appresa da Katy/Katharyn: possiamo sognare e essere la persona che desideriamo essere e fare ciò che vogliamo, ma dobbiamo apprezzare anche durante il percorso le cose belle che accadono durante la vita.
D: Quali sono i tuoi consigli a coloro che sono alle prese con la scrittura del loro primo libro?
R: Continuate a scrivere: non arrendetevi. Trovate una community con altri scrittori per poter condividere con loro il lavoro, aiutando la carriera e lo spirito di entrambi. Se non si trova una community in luogo, ce ne sono molte online.
D: Per terminare questa intervista, c’è qualcosa che vorrei dire ai lettori che compreranno il tuo libro?

Today my pen will fly overseas, and will take visit to the world of a famous American writer who, with her first novel, is depopulating all over the world.
Her name is Cynthia Swanson, writer of the book with the Italian title “La rivincita di una libraia” (Garzanti Editore), which soon will become a movie produced and played by the greatest actress Julia Roberts. The main character of this masterpiece is the theme of choice, a place and even a no place where we can always shelter.
The choice of being who we want to be, but also the choice to become the exactly opposite. A battle between who we are and who we will be. There’s also the fight between reality and dreams, a different life from what we live and a life equal to that we dream.
The only certainly of Katharyn, the main character of the novel, is her library, a world made by the words that she dreams in the night when her life is a paradise in the eyes. Words that seems fading when she finds forced to open her eyes, an excuse to stay alive. The style of the writer is simple and immediate, and she gives to the audience the sensation to be in that world built by the imagination and never left.
Now, I give the word to Cynthia Swanson, wishing her to continue in this wonderful way.
Q: How was the idea of this novel born?
A: One day while I was going about my regular life, I had a brief moment in which I began to doubt I belonged where I was. My life, in that moment, didn’t feel quite real to me. It made me think about a character who begins to wonder (on a recurring basis) if she is where she belongs.
Q: I can define the Library as “the world of dreams”. What is the library’s role in your life?
A: Anywhere I can be around books is a dream space for me. I love the abundance of possibility in bookstores and libraries.
Q: Which are the differences and the similiraties between you and the main charachter, Kitty?
A: Kitty is more independent than me, and more content with her life (or, at least, she learns to be content). But we both love books, music, art – and cats!
Q: Why did you choose the city of Denver for your novel?
A: Denver is the city I live in, so it was a natual choice. I’m not a Denver native – I’ve lived here about 15 years – so researching the history of Denver was fascinating to me.
Q: During the writing, why did you choose to talk about the constant battle between dreams and reality?
A: I think it’s a universal battle, one that all of us think about a lot. The “what if?” question is one that every person asks of himself or herself at certain points. I wanted to explore how dreams collide with the “what if’s?” that all of us consider.
Q: Your novel is going to become a story for a film produced and played by Julia Roberts. What are your sensations and your expectations?
A: It’s very flattering, of course! Julia Roberts is one of my favorite actresses, so I’m thrilled she’s going to star in the movie version of The Bookseller. As for my expectations, I’m taking it step by step. It’s a long process before the movie actually comes out, so I celebrate each milestone as it comes along, and try not to think too much about what’s yet to come.
Q: What is the message that you want to transmit to the readers, by your pages?
A: To learn the lesson that Kitty/Katharyn does: that we can have our dreams, and we should aspire to be the best people we can be and do the things we want to do most – but we should also, along the way, appreciate all the good already in our lives.
Q: What are your suggestion to the emerging writers who knows for the first time the world of editing?
A: Keep writing; don’t give up. Find a community of other writers to exchange your work with, help bolter each other’s spirits and careers, and champion each other’s books. If you can’t find a local writers’ community, there are many writers’ groups online.
Q: To finish this interview, is there something that you want to say to italian readers who bought your wonderful novel?
