Oggi vi parliamo di una musica speciale, diversa, originale. E’ una musica che si potrebbe ascoltare ad occhi chiusi, per quanta intensità è in grado di donare. La produttrice di questa musica è Dami Im, celebre cantante australiana, nata in Corea del Sud, seconda classificata all’Eurovision 2016 in cui ha rappresentato l’Australia con il brano “The Sound of Silence”.
La musica di Dami è dunque una musica che riesce a trasportare in altri mondi e dimensioni, offrendo a chi la ascolta la possibilità di vivere altre vite. Quelle vite fatte solo di note e voci, di un ritmo impossibile da dimenticare. Lo stile di Dami è uno stile che lascia il segno, che offre nuove opportunità di conoscersi e di restare sé stesso; è uno stile che vince su tutto e che attira occhi e orecchie, ma soprattutto cuori e anime.
La sua è una voce soave, delicata, quasi trasparente, ma capace di infrangere i vetri infrangibili contenuti in ognuno di noi, lasciando dunque piccole parti di cuore sul palco in cui Dami canta, così da trasformare pubblico e musica un’unica persona in un unico luogo.
Dami Im ha pubblicato il suo album d’esordio Dream nel 2010, a cui hanno fatto seguito due EP negli anni seguenti. Il successo è arrivato con il trionfo alla quinta stagione del talent-show The X Factor Australia, vinto nell’ottobre 2013. Ha quindi pubblicato un album con la Sony, l’eponimo Dami Im, nel novembre del 2013. Il disco ha raggiunto il primo posto nella ARIA Charts ed è stato certificato disco di platino in Australia. Il singolo Alive ha ottenuto un forte successo in Australia, ma è andato molto bene anche in Corea del Sud e in altri paesi. Il videoclip del brano è stato diretto da Dannii Minogue. Nel 2014 ha collaborato con Jessica Mauboy e altre artiste alla realizzazione del singolo I Am Australian, cover di un brano degli anni ’80 molto popolare in Australia. Nel maggio e agosto 2014 ha pubblicato rispettivamente i singoli Super Love e Gladiator, che preludono alla pubblicazione del suo terzo disco, Heart Beats. SBS l’ha scelta per rappresentare l’Australia all’Eurovision Song Contest 2016, l’annuncio è stato dato il 3 marzo 2016 da Conchita Wurst all’Opera House di Sydney, con il brano Sound of Silence. Viene tra l’altro reso disponibile per la pre-ordinazione il quarto album in studio Classic Carpenters. Il 12 maggio riesce a qualificarsi per la finale di sabato. Si classifica seconda, preceduta da Ucraina e precedendo la Russia, grande favorita fino alla finale.

D: Cosa rappresenta la musica nella tua vita?
R: Considero la musica un’altra lingua con la quale comunicare. Una lingua che permette di esprimere alle persone sentimenti ed emozioni che non possono essere trasmesse tramite il linguaggio verbale.
D: Diventi famosa grazie alla partecipazione ad X Factor Australia nel 2013. Raccontaci di questa esperienza.
R: E’ stata un’esperienza ad occhi aperti, ma allo stesso tempo una sfida con me stessa. La musica è da sempre stata una parte importante della mia vita sin da quando ero piccola, da quando suonavo come una pianista classica, a quando mi sono cimentata nel canto jazz. L’esperienza di X Factor mi ha dato la possibilità di condividere la mia esperienza musicale con un pubblico più vasto.
D: Quando hai preso parte al programma, ti aspettavi di vincerlo?
R: Non totalmente. Quando decisi di prendere parte alle audizioni il mio obiettivo era di apparire in TV al massimo una volta, e questo poi mi avrebbe aiutato a fare più concerti nella mia città.
D: Com’è cambiata la tua vita dopo questa esperienza?
R: In ambito lavorativo la mia vita è cambiata tantissimo. Il cambiamento più grande è che posso registrare la mia musica e fare tour con la mia musica. E’ un sogno che si trasforma in realtà.
D: Dopo X Factor, il tuo singolo è stato “Alive”. Cosa ci puoi dire a riguardo di questa canzone?
R: Questa canzone è speciale per me dato che è stata la prima canzone che ho realizzato con il mio nome, non una cover di un altro artista. E’ un messaggio di speranza per raggiungere i propri sogni e le proprie emozioni sentendosi vivi.
D: Quali erano le tue sensazioni dopo aver appreso della partecipazione all’Eurovision Song Contest?
R: Non potevo credere di prendere parte ad un evento così importante. Ero onorata e determinata a fare sempre meglio. Ho messo sotto pressione me stessa ma i risultati più belli sono giunti alla fine.
D: La tua canzone si chiama “Sound of silence”. Raccontaci del messaggio che vuoi trasmettere attraverso questa canzone
R: E’ una canzone che riguarda la distanza da qualcuno che ami. Personalmente è dedicata ai miei momenti in hotel lontani da Noah.
D: Ti aspettavi il successo dopo l’Eurovision?
R: Non mi aspettavo la mia canzone nelle classifiche di molti paesi.
D: Come immagini la tua vita tra dieci anni?
R: Vorrei realizzare più album di adesso, aver girato per tutta Europa, e continuare a fare musica.
D: Quali sono i tuoi futuri progetti?
R: Sto lavorando su un nuovo album che spero di realizzare entro questo anno. A gennaio sarò anche a Londra e spero di avere sempre più possibilità di esibirmi al di fuori dall’Australia.

Today we’re going to talk about a different, special and original music. It’s a music that we could listen with close eyes, for the intensity that it can give. The musician of this music is Dami Im, famous australian singer, born in the South of Corea, second runner to the Eurovision 2016, where she represented her country with the song “The sound of silence”.
Dami’s music is a music that can take in others worlds and dimensions, giving the possibility to the listeners to live others lives. These lives are made of notes and voices, of a rhytme impossible to forget. Dami’s style leaves the mark, gives new opportunities to know ourselves and remain ourselves; it is a style that win everything and capture eyes, ears, but especially hearts and souls.
Her voice is gentle, delicate, almost transparent, but it can break the breakable glass that everyone has, leaving little pieces of heart on the stages where Dami sings, transforming audience and music in an only person, in an only place.
Dami Im became known predominantly for achieving the highest score ever for Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest, and for winning the fifth season of The X Factor Australia. Following her victory on the talent show, she was offered a recording contract with Sony Australia. She released the winning single, “Alive,” in 2013, and it debuted at number one in the Aria Singles Chart. Im was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Brisbane, Australia at the age of nine as her parents believed she and her younger sister would have a better life there. Having studied in the Young Conservatorium of Music program at Griffith University, Im went on to have a short career performing at Christian youth camps, and released an album in 2010 titled Dream, to raise money for the church. In 2013, Im auditioned for The X Factor Australia and progressed though the series with Kylie Minogue as her mentor. During her time on the show, she gave many notable performances, including covers of “One” by U2 and Prince’s “Purple Rain. Im capitalized on her success in the show by becoming the first winner to achieve a number one single followed by a number one album — her self-titled debut. She made a shift in direction with her second record, 2014’s Heart Beats. Whereas Dami Im was an album of covers that had featured in her X Factor performances, Heart Beats was composed of original songs. In 2016, Im was chosen to represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest. She sang “Sound of Silence,” and the performance made her the first Australian contestant to reach the semi-finals, as well as the first to achieve a record-breaking score of 320. It was the highest score an Australian representative had ever received. In the same year, Im released her third studio album.

Q: What music represents in your life?
A: I consider music to be another language that I speak. It’s a language that let’s people express emotions and feelings that can’t be captured in spoken language.
Q: You become famous thanks to the partecipation of X Factor Australia in 2013. Talk us about this experience.
A: It was an eye-opening experience and a challenging one as well. Music has been an important part of my life since I was a child as I was trained as a classical pianist, then jazz singing. But being on X Factor opened up opportunities for my lifetime of music to be shared with a lot of people.
Q: When you were taking part of that program, did you exspect to win it?
A: Not at all. When I decided to audition my goal was to be shown on TV at least once, which would help me find more gigs around town.
Q: How your life has changed after this experience?
A: So much change has happened in terms of my career. The biggest change is that I get to make a living out of recording my music and touring which is a dream come true.
Q: After X Factor, Your first single has been “Alive”. What can you tell us about this song?
A: This song is special to me as it was the first song I got to release under my name, not a cover of another artist. It’s got a hopeful message of achieving your dreams and feelings alive.
Q: What were your feelings when you knew about your partecipation at the Eurovision song Contest?
A: I couldn’t believe that I was going to be a part of such a huge event. I was so honoured and also very determined to perform well. I put a lot of pressure on myself but I feel that in the end it all paid off. I had the best time.
Q: Your song is called “Sound of Silence”. Tell us about the message that you wanted to express in this song.
A: It’s a song about feeling distant from somebody you love. Personally it’s about the times I have to spend in hotel rooms away from Noah.
Q: Did you expect the success after the Eurovision?
A: I didn’t expect my song to be charting in so many countries in so many countries.
Q: How do you imagine your life in ten years?
A: I want to have released a few more albums by then, and have toured in Europe and still making music.
Q: What are your future projects?
A: I’m working on a new original album which I’m hoping to release this year. I’m also coming to London to perform in January and hopefully will have more opportunities to perform outside of Australia!
