Il suo nome è Chris Medina, la splendida voce della meravigliosa canzone “What are words”.
Un inno alla speranza e all’amore, e anche un inno all’emozione. Quella che si avverte ascoltando una voce delicata come la sua; una piuma che vola nell’anima di chi ascolta.
Nel tardo 2010 Chris Medina fa un audizione per il reality e talent show “American Idol” ricevendo un “biglietto d’oro verso Hollywood”, arrivando tra I primi 40 tra i 327 contendenti nella stagione 10 del 2011. Il giorno dopo la sua eliminazione, il 25 febbraio del 2011, “What are words”, dalla 19 Recordings, realizzata in tutto il mondo. La canzone debutta al ventiduesimo posto della Heartseekers Songs, raggiungendo l’ottantatreesimo posto della Billboard Hot 100, vendendo nel 2012 circa 105.000 copie. Il singolo è arrivato primo in Norvegia e Svezia restando stabile per 19 settimane, 11 in Norvegia e 8 in Svezia. Si è esibito nel The Tonight Show con Jay Leno, Good Morning America e a Live with Regis and Kelly. Nell’estate del 2011, Medina è stato invitato ad esibirsi in molti paesi del mondo, incluso Norvegia, Svezia, Danimarca, Germania e Singapore. D: Come nasce la tua passione per la musica?
R: La mia abilità nel suonare musica e la mia passione nell’esibirmi nasce in diversi stadi della mia vita. Mio padre è stato il primo a capire che avevo talento; avevo circa 4 anni. Stavamo guardando il film “Big” con Tom Hanks. C’è una scena in quel film dove Tom e il suo capo suonano la canzone “Heart and Soul” in un grande pianerottolo. Sono andato nella mia stanza cercando di riprodurre il suono con un flauto giocattolo, che ora capisco quanto sia bello possedere a quell’età. In quel momento mio padre decise di farmi frequentare una scuola di musica per poter apprendere gli accordi. La mia passione per la musica inizia a circa 10 anni. Diventai amico di un mio compagno di corso, e dopo scuola ascoltavamo i CD della collezione di suo fratello. È in questo periodo che ho conosciuto i Nirvana. Da qui in poi, per me è esistita solo la musica rock. Volevo suonare la chitarra, volevo suonare in una band, volevo diventare famoso… Volevo essere un componente dei Nirvana.
D: Cosa ti aspettavi dalle audizioni di “American Idol”?
R: Onestamente, non mi aspettavo nulla di più che rendere orgogliosa la gente che mi spingeva a provarci. Non è stato un mio sogno partecipare in uno show come American Idol; era il sogno della mia precedente fidanzata e la sua famiglia. Loro credevano nelle mie capacità, più di me.
D: Qual è il tuo miglior ricordo durante il programma?
R: Credo che il miglior ricordo sia stato riguardare la mia audizione insieme alla mia famiglia e ai miei amici. È stato selvaggio! Tutti erano felici e c’era un’energia che fino ad allora non avevo mai provato. Ne avevamo davvero bisogno, di essere speranzosi e felici per qualcosa. Qualcosa in cui credere e guardare avanti. È stato davvero magico! Sono diventato subito popolare nella città in cui abitavo, che è la stessa dove sono cresciuto. Ero valido.
D: Com’è cambiata la tua vita dopo “American Idol”?
R: Sono diventato subito noto. Le persone si erano innamorate della mia storia e della mia canzone! Ho girato il mondo firmando cd e lavorato con persone fantastiche, leggendarie! Ma American Idol è un programma difficile. Nonostante la popolarità dello show, durante gli anni è diventato un programma di intrattenimento per le masse, piuttosto che uno show che cerca artisti davvero capaci di essere una firma nell’industria musicale. È difficile venga preso sul serio. Quindi sono fuggito dalle mie iniziali ispirazione di esplosione virale negli Stati Uniti. Dopo ciò, ho dovuto combattere con forza dimostrando che avevo senso del business e la forza per restare.
D: Qual è il tuo rapporto con i fans?
R: Non c’è un me con i miei fans. Ho trovato fans davvero interessati e dedicati al marcio, cioè me. Ho avuto un aumento meteorico! E con quell’aumento sono venute le legioni dei cosiddetti fans! Ma come vari artisti, dopo una fase di esplorazione di me stesso, sono cresciuto e cambiato, e come sono cambiato io è cambiata la mia musica. Questa è la teoria di quel che ero. Molti di quelli che erano miei fans, sono usciti fuori dal radar. All’inizio può sembrare triste, ma allo stesso tempo ci sono molti che hanno continuato a viaggiare con me, e ne arrivano altri. Scriverò sempre musica, ma la realizzerò solo se i fans vorranno ascoltarla. Quindi amo i miei fans! Loro sono la mia ragione!
D: Diventi famoso anche con la tua meravigliosa canzone “What are words”. Parlaci di questa canzone.
R: Realizzare questa canzone non è stato solo un miracolo, ma qualcosa di mai visto. Sono stato il primo concorrente eliminato da “American Idol” ad aver realizzato una canzone mentre gli altri continuavano nella competizione. A nessun altro è stato permesso farlo. Questo è stato possibile grazie a quanto fosse diventata virale la mia storia, e ne sono molto fiero. È stato possibile non approfittando delle royalties. Così, ho fatto un fondo fiduciario per la mia fidanzata di allora (Juliana Ramos) e il 100% dei canoni è andato a lei. Così abbiamo fatto la storia. Ero a Los Angeles quando ho ricevuto la chiamata dall’A&R rappresentante del 19 entertainment. Lui mi disse che l’acclamato Rodney Jerkins aveva fatto una canzone per me. Ed era What Are Words. Ha chiamato in un lampo Lauren Christy, attualmente mio miglior amico e mentore, e Andre Lindal. Si è seduto, e insieme abbiamo visto le mie apparizioni in tv cogliendone le frasi e inserendole nella canzone. È stato bello camminare in studio e ascoltare le cose che avevo detto in studio nella canzone.
D: Quali sono le emozioni che provi quando canti?
R: Dipende dalla canzone che sto cantando, cerco di portare la mia mente al sentimento della canzone: felice, triste, speranzoso ecc.. Sono sempre soddisfatto quando mi esibisco.
D: Qual è il ruolo della musica nella tua vita?
R: È il mio pensiero, la mia passione, il mio desiderio, la mia sfida, il mio talento, il mio orgoglio, il mio sesso, la mia droga, il mio amore, il mio tutto. Do profondamente me stesso alla musica.
D: Quali sono i tuoi futuri progetti?
R: Il 2018 sembra essere un anno fantastico. Dopo un lungo periodo di rivalutazione della mia vita e dei miei obiettivi, mi sto preparando a rientrare nel mondo della musica con nuova musica fresca. Sto partecipando ad un programma tv norvegese, e lavorando anche ad un album per Natale! Sono eccitato nel mostrare la mia nuova musica e il nuovo me. Sarò impegnato e ciò mi rende felice.

It’s incredible how someone can be able to do this magic. Today, for this reason, we’re going to know a genius of music that talks.
His name is Chris Medina, the amazing voice of the song “What are words”.
An hymn to the hope and love, an hymn to the feelings. The sensation that we feel, listening his delicate voice. A plume that flyes in the soul of the listener.
In late 2010, Chris Medina auditioned for the reality show and talent contest “American Idol” and received a “golden ticket to Hollywood”, making it to the top 40 out of 327 contestants on Season 10 in 2011. On the day after his elimination, February 25, 2011, “What Are Words,” recorded for Simon Cowell’s record label 19 Recordings, was released worldwide. Medina stated publicly the song is about his fiancée, Juliana Ramos, who suffered a brain injury as the result of a serious car accident on October 2, 2009, two months before they were to be married, and the storyline was heavily used during his American Idol tryout, even being brought on the show to emphasize the powerful nature of the song. The song debuted at #22 on the Heatseekers Songs chart, and then reached #83 on the Billboard Hot 100. As of 2012 it has since sold 105,000 copies. The single went to #1 in Norway and Sweden and spent 19 weeks at number 1 combined. 11 in Norway and 8 in Sweden. He has performed the ballad on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, and on Live With Regis and Kelly. In the summer of 2011, Medina was invited to perform in countries all over the world, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Singapore. In Singapore he performed for the “President’s Star Charity”, which is done to raise money for the physically and mentally challenged. He was able to help raise millions for this charity. Medina sang the song at the funeral of 18-year-old Monica Iselin Didriksen, one of the victims of the Norwegian terror attacks. Didriksen loved that song, and her parents asked him to come and sing at her funeral. An album was quickly recorded and released on November 28, 2011, also titled “What Are Words”, to capitalize on the popularity of the song. The album failed to chart. To date Medina has not released another single off the album except in Sweden and Norway, where the song “One More Time” charted at Number 16. “Amazed” was released as a third single off the album in Norway only in May 2012.

Q: How was your passion for music born?
A: My ability to play music and my passion to perform it came at different points in my life. It was my father that first realized I had a talent; I was about 4 years old. He recalls us watching the classic movie “Big” with Tom Hanks. There is a scene in that movie where Tom and his boss play the song Heart and Soul on a giant floor keyboard. It was a great scene and apparently I went nuts over it. I went into my room and learned how to play it on a toy flute, which I know now is pretty amazing at such a young age. So it was at that moment my father something there and took to a music school to learn how to play the accordion. My passion for music came at about 10 years of age. I had made a friend at the school I was attending and we would get together after school and listen to his brothers CD collection. That was when I was introduced to Nirvana! From that point on, it was all about Rock music. I wanted to play the guitar, I wanted to start a band, I wanted to be famous… I pretty much wanted to be Nirvana!
Q: What did you expect by the audition for “American Idol”?
A: Honestly, I didn’t expect anything more than to make the people that wanted me to tryout proud. It wasn’t my dream to participate on a show like American Idol, it was the dream of my then fiancé and her family. They really believed I had the potential to go far in the competition, more than I did.
Q: What is your best memory that you had, during that programme?
A: I believe the best memory was seeing my audition unfold on TV with all my friends and family. It was wild! Everyone was so excited and there was an energy in the room that I never experience since. We all needed it at the time too. Something to be hopeful for and excited for. Something to root for and look forward to. It was magical! I was instantly famous in the town I was living and in the city I grew up in. I was valid!
Q: How has your life changed after “American Idol”?
A: Instantly I became a household name. People fell in love with my story and my song! I toured the world and signed record deals and worked with amazing people; legendary people! But, American Idol is a tricky thing. Despite how popular and famous the show is, it seems over the years it has become simply a show to entertain the masses, rather than a show that finds an artist truly capable of making a serious mark in the industry. Contestants on the show have a hard time being accepted or taken seriously. So I ran into that after my initial viral explosion in US. Since then, I truly have had to fight and force my way back into the industry and prove that I have the business sense and the appeal to stay.
Q: What is your bond with your fans?
A: Well, there is no me with my fans. I found fans that are truly interested and dedicated to the brand that is me. I had a meteoric rise! And with that rise came legions of so called fans! But, like many artists, I went through a phase of self exploration. I, like so many others, began to grow and change, and as I changed, so did the music. So did the theory of who I was. A lot of so called fans dropped off the radar. Which, at first sounds sad. However, there were so many more that stayed with me on my journey, and so many more that continue to arrive. I will always write music, but I’ll only release it if the fans want to hear it. So, I love my fans! They are my reason!
Q: You became famous also for your wonderful song “What are words”. Talk us about it.
A: Just getting that song released was not only a miracle, but it was also unprecedented. I was the first American Idol contestant to be eliminated from the show that was allowed to release a song while the rest of the season played out. No other contestant in the shows history has been allowed to do that. It definitely was because of how viral my story was. I am proud of that. The only way it was able to get done was to not profit off the royalties. So, I made a trust fund for my then fiancé (Juliana Ramos) and 100% of the royalties went to her. That’s how we were able to make history. I was in LA when I received a call from an A&R representative of 19 entertainment. He said the acclaimed Rodney Jerkins had put together a song for me. It was What Are Words. He had called in a genius of a top liner in Lauren Christy, who now is my close friend and mentor, and Andre Lindal. He sat them down and made them watch my tv time on the show and used my quotes to put together the song. It was cool to walk in studio and hear things I was saying on the show put into a song!
Q: What are your emotions when you sing?
A: it depends on what song I am singing. But I always seem to allow my mind to tap into the feeling of the song. Happy, Sad, Hopeful, etc. But, I always feel a satisfaction when I perform; a release.
Q: What is the role of music in your life?
A: It is my meditation, my passion, my desire, my challenge, my talent, my pride, my sex, my drug, my love, my everything. I truly give myself to it.
Q: What are your future projects?
A: 2018 seems to be a wonderful year in the making. After such a long time off, reevaluating my life and my goals, I am preparing to reenter the music world in 2018 with fresh new music. I am participating on a TV show in Norway, and working on a Christmas album as well! I am excited to show the nee music and the new me! I will be busy and that makes me happy.
